Westlife formed in 1998, they were first signed by Simon Cowell and managed by Louis Walsh and Boyzone singer Ronan Keating. The original line up was made up of Shane Filan, Nicky Byrne, Kian Egan, Mark Feeily and Brian McFadden. McFadden left the group in 2004 to pursue his own solo project and the band continued as a four-piece.
Westlife’s success began when their first single ‘Swear It Again’ topped the charts in 1999. In their early years they toured as support for the big boys on the block, the Backstreet Boys and Boyzone and soon released their self-titled debut album, which went straight to number one in the charts and established Westlife. In addition, their first 7 singles all went to number one in the UK charts, a record only held by The Beatles.
Over the next few years Westlife released more number one albums, singles, Christmas number ones and scooped ‘Record of the Year’ 3 times in the space of 5 years.
Westlife had arrived and took their place amongst the biggest bands. The departure of Brian didn’t stop the boys and they toured relentlessly at this point in time, travelling all over the world. Songs such as ‘You Raise Me Up’ and ‘The Rose’ both charted at number one, giving the boys 14 number one singles which put them in joint third place with Cliff Richard to have the most number one singles, both of them only behind Elvis and The Beatles. Westlife’s last album ‘Where We Are’ was released in 2009.
